The Virginia courts describe small claims as a process for civil money claims of up to $5,000. Read the official small-claims guide for jurisdiction, forms, service, and hearing information. Other states have different rules.

Make an amount worksheet

- Identify the record supporting it, such as a receipt, invoice, or agreement.
- Separate paid, disputed, and estimated amounts.
- List questions about interest, fees, or remedies for qualified advice.
Keep original records and use a timeline to explain the sequence. An exhibit index helps label copies; the court determines what it will consider.
Confirm practical requirements
Use the official guide to check the correct court, current form, filing costs, service process, and hearing instructions. Ask how to request accommodations or language access if needed. Do not assume filing a document completes service or that a judgment automatically results in payment.
